Finally Dipped My Toe Into The Video Editing Pool (Verdict: Warm And Fuzzy Feeling)

July 6, 2007

ponderplace.comIts been a long time coming. Or maybe not, because I’ve never really recorded video before.

Well, I’ve at least wanted too for a long time now. And I finally did, last night.

You can see the evidence of this by going to ponderplace.com and locating the Ponder Live! broadcast S01E07.

The funny thing is that I worked to get this all done last night. I used Windows Movie Maker - its a free video editing program provided by Microsoft. The old adage “you get what you pay for” applies. While it is very easy to use (good for consumers) and is quick to put out a simple video (good for consumers). It is completely inflexible, making it completely ineffective for my objectives (bad for me).

So I spent from roughly 6:30pm to 7:30pm…maybe even less, it really surprised me how quickly I was able to get all the footage. Then from there I worked until probably 10:00pm putting the video stuff together in Windows Movie Maker. Then I tried getting my audio ambitions off the ground. Turns out I spent alot of time on that and ended up deleting 90% of what I created for the video.

Then at about 12:50am I realized I was not going to be able to finish my original vision with Windows Movie Maker. So I had to start from scratch piecing the video-clips together again.

When all was said and done; it was 2:45am and I was exporting the movie. Hoping I’d found an acceptable file-size/quality in the morning.

…sleepy time…

I woke up and found the file size was HUGE (250mb) and the quality sucked. I’d obviously missed the mark.

The good news is that while in between making breakfast, I was able to figure out how to export the movie into a flash file which was small, and decent quality.

Mission accomplished.

I’m going to have alot of fun messing around with this video stuff. And hopefully I’ll figure out a way to export movies properly.
