Well this week doesn’t look so accomplished as previous, but there has been plenty of progress. I’ve been spending a lot of time on the Red Balloon script. Its getting to the point where Mat needs to come back into things and we need to figure out the plot holes and character development. But Mat’s in Tennessee…so i’m not sure how thats going to work out.
Mat just sent me the faces he came up with. Here they are…

I just had a chance to review the pictures I took last night for The Red Balloon (see them here).
This is my favorite of the bunch. Though there are a few others that caught my eye too.
Tonight I went to Target and purchased some materials for character development on one of the characters in The Red Balloon. I’m not going to tell you who this character is or what role this character plays. Its a secret.
Anyway, $2.88 later I had everything I needed for tonights work on The Red Balloon character development.
Take a look at the pictures. Thats mainly what this post is for.

I just realized that I’ve never detailed what The Red Balloon is, let me do that now.
Project Name: The Red Balloon
Project Start Date: 9/19/2007 at 10:40pm
Project Start Location: House of Mat Black (Matthew Curtis)
Summary: The Red Balloon is a short film. Currently Mat Black and myself are working out the script. Eventually we’ll be moving on to either filming it ourselves. Or finding a group to collaborate with.
The name “The Red Balloon” is a working title. It will be changing at some point before release.
The Story (in 3rd person):
It all started on 2007.09.19 at 10:40pm. Stephen Jensen and Mat Black (Matthew Curtis) were hanging out. When suddenly…
This movie was the inspiration of Mat Black. Over the course of about 30 minutes (Stephen’s best guess from memory) Mat laid out the basic structure of what happens in this story. We had the story from start to finish. Stephen wrote as Mat spoke, Stephen basically acted as the scribe, but also the translter. Because Mat would say something, and Stephen would convert that to a more flowy and articulately worded sentences.
Once the basic structure was laid out, the decision was made to each work on a scene and rewrite each one.
Mat was able rewrite one scene (I think it was scene one, but I failed to notate). Basically Mat concluded that his writing was too slow, and that Stephen should do the revisions. Mat thought Stephens revisions were better and whatnot. Ironically Stephen did not agree and was very impressed with Mats work.
In the end, Stephen was assigned revisions. Stephen didn’t mind at all and Mat was glad because he didn’t have to spend hours and hours in front of the computer, hen-pecking away; yes Mat types with his two index fingers.
Today was awesome. I had the day off from work, a bit of a cool-down period from my vacation to Cali. I wrote out a list of things to do. On that list I wrote that I wanted to work on revising The Red Balloon (working title) script.
Well, starting at 11:14 am I began working on the script. I stopped for a while to do lunch, and I talked on the phone with my mom. However, the bulk of my time was spent working on the script. I worked on it until 7:52 pm. I felt burnt out, but very successful in my revision work.
See notes in “history.txt” pertaining to the rewriting of the script.
This is a huge milestone because I was able to revise the ending of Scene 21, and the remaining Scenes 22-32. Granted, several of those scene’s are short, but still, it was quite a bit of work I was able to achieve today.
I could consider the script totally revised (1st draft revised, see notes below) but I am not marking it as wholly revised. The reason is that there is a section of the script which we have an alternate writing for. It is significant enough that I want to revise the Alternate as well as I do the main section of the script. I hope to get the alternate done so i can post an official “Revision 1 done, x more to go.” post.
There are still many revisions planned in the future. This one was a big one. It filled in most the gaps, ironed out most of the large wrinkles and really gave face to the overall story.
I’ve managed to take pretty good notes of my writing throughout this process (writing about writing as it were). The files containing these notes are currently stored on my thumbdrive under \Movies\Red Balloon\history.txt. They should be helpful when it comes time to add a bunch of stuff for the final DVD release.
While revising the script today, I realized that Josh (Joshua M Neal) was in the perfect position to aid me. In The Red Balloon, one of the side characters (Patric) ends up in a mental institution. There are quite a few scene’s where Patric is in this institution. I have no real knowledge to pull from as I write the settings and the character interaction. With this in mind I gave Josh a call. He is willing to help (yeay!) so I emailed him a list of questions that I had pertaining to the scenes. The questions I sent Josh can be found in \Movies\Red Balloon\Questions for Josh Neal 001.doc.
I imagine after this first round of questions (depending on the outcome), I’ll probably want to just print out the script. Give Josh a highlighter, and have him read the scene’s pertaining to the mental institution, highlighting items he wants to give advice on. This may be difficult given I’m in AZ and he is in UT. It’s okay though, we’ll figure it out.
